Effective communication between team members is the fundamentals of any successful business. It helps achieve common ground and goals that creates a positive workplace environment. Here are some of the ways I communicate to my colleagues.
Practice active listening
While talking with colleagues, I try to show that I am genuinely interested in what they are saying. It could be something simple such as asking follow up questions or requesting further elaboration. By doing this, a mutual respect is fostered between me and my colleagues.
Supervisors could also do this by showing more appreciation towards colleagues instead of showing disinterest or worst, giving preferential treatment.
Use a positive tone when talking
When conversing with my colleagues, adapting a positive tone is the best way to go for most scenarios. Complimenting them on their new shoes or providing encouragement in work related matters strengthen the bond between the team.
When using a positive tone, always remember to never sound too exuberant either as you may come across as fake and disingenuous while communicating with your colleagues. Superiors must adapt this tone as well to encourage employees to communicate more. By not giving out a negative impression, colleagues will be more open to discuss things rather than keeping it quiet.
Tailor your communication style
Not everyone is cut from the same cloth, so adapting to their different communication styles is essential! Some may prefer direct and concise messages, while others appreciate a more detailed outline of the topic at hand. Recognizing their different styles will have provide your topics with more clarity and better impact while talking to that other person.
Encourage each other
When the situation does call for it, I would always encourage my colleagues with constructive criticism when it comes to work related matters, such as leaving early from home to never be late. The important thing to remember is that both you and your colleagues are equal and the constructive criticism that is delivered should sound and feel like it was made by an equal.
Mastering the art of talking with your team members takes time and practice. Combining active listening and adapting to the different styles of communication is something all of us will learn throughout our working lives. A business is as strong as the people who work in it!
